How to Decorate With Mustard Tones

See how mustard yellow can be rich, warm and welcoming when used in a living space

Tempted by mustard, yellow or ochre in your home? Here are a few ideas of how to decorate with these punchy shades.

Create a soft, earthy palette
Some people shrink away from decorating with yellow for fear of creating a scheme that's too bright and zingy, but mustard tones can give a room a surprisingly soft and natural feel.

This scheme shows how a mustard-coloured sofa can be right at home when set against an earthy backdrop of mushroom, cream and taupe.

To get the look at home, combine mustard with natural textures and plenty of wood, and keep patterns and fuss to a minimum to create a softly rustic feel.

Paint a statement piece
Upcycling a piece of furniture can be a fun way to experiment with stronger paint colours than you might usually choose, and this mustard armoire is a wonderful example of how this fun shade can bring new life to a dark-wood piece.

If you want to upcycle something similar yourself but are short on time, look for chalk-based paints and brands that can be used directly on wooden furniture without too much prep to cut out the time-consuming levels of sanding that could otherwise be needed.

Team it with gold
The mustard velvet cushions in this living room are subtly referenced in the warm gold accessories that bring life and character to this contemporary scheme.

The small gold floor lamp and softly burnished gold picture frame create a triangle of accents when placed next to the cushions that's visually very pleasing.

To create a similar look, think in groups of three or five, and pair mustard accessories with brass or gold for a look that feels pulled together but not too 'matchy-matchy'.

Enhance the daylight
While mustard tones are softer than their citrus yellow cousins, they can have just as much of a cheering effect when teamed with crisp white. In fact, mustard can have a more warming effect than very bright tones, as it has red in it, so can feel richer and cosier.

Add mustard accessories to rooms that already have plenty of natural light in order to enhance the effect, and keep all other decorations bright.

Energise a child's room
Mustard yellow is an invigorating shade, so it's the perfect colour to use in a playroom to create a fresh and happy feel.

Here, a mustard velvet sofa is cosy and inviting, and the clean lines and gently curved shape allow the colour to shine against the crisp white walls behind.

Look for vintage pieces to create a similar look, or update an existing sofa or chair with a soft mustard throw.

Warm up grey
While it's a popular shade, grey can be a difficult colour to get right in north-facing rooms, or rooms where light levels are low.

Here, a soft grey bedroom scheme has been warmed up at a stroke by the addition of the mustard-coloured accessories. By choosing a rich, ochre shade for the cushions and throw, and using tactile materials, the bed has been elevated into a cosy retreat.

Break up a neutral scheme
Take the mustard-toned accessories out of this living room and you have a very nice, neutral-toned scheme, but keep them in and you have a room with soul.

Just two simple accessories – the cushion and the lamp – bring so much character and warmth to the scheme it really demonstrates the power of this sunny shade.

To create this look at home, search for oversized cushions (this has more impact than a scattering of small ones) and a vintage-style, powder-coated lamp to create a modern rustic look.

Add an unexpected element
It takes vision to paint such a prominent piece of furniture mustard yellow, but, in this room scheme, it totally pays off, bringing character, fun and warmth to the large space.

Kitchens can sometimes run the risk of feeling cold, especially with stone flooring and exposed brick walls as here, but bringing in the yellow island shows how the addition of this colour can create a cosy, farmhouse feel that's homely and inviting.

Showcase a splashback
Another way to bring warmth into a kitchen is to choose a mustard tone for your splashback. For an area that's not in danger of getting splattered frequently, a coat of paint will make a quick impact.

Alternatively, try a ribbon of mustard-coloured tiles or back-painted glass to add warmth behind a sink or hob.

Flood a bedroom with sunshine
An obvious way to decorate with mustard in a bedroom is to bring in small accessories to update a neutral-coloured bed. But here the homeowners have flipped that idea on its head by choosing a mustard-coloured bed frame and accessorising it with neutral bed linen and cushions instead.

Look for upholstered bedframes in tactile velvet or linen to recreate this look, and keep the rest of your room calm and clutter-free to allow the bed to shine.
